Hattusha, also known as Hattusa, was the capital of the Hittite Empire in ancient Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). The Hittites were an ancient Anatolian people who established an empire around the 17th century BCE and reached their peak during the 14th and 13th centuries BCE. Hattusha served as the political and administrative center of the Hittite Empire.
Key features of Hattusha include its well-fortified walls and gates, a large citadel, and numerous temples and other public buildings. The city's ruins are located near modern Boğazkale, Turkey, and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986.
The Hittite civilization is notable for its contributions to the history and culture of the ancient Near East. The Hittite Empire eventually declined and fell around the 12th century BCE, likely due to a combination of internal and external factors, including invasions by the Sea Peoples and other geopolitical changes in the region.
